Economic Overview

What we brief clients on

Oil historically anchored Qatar's economy and still generates over 70% of government revenue, but natural gas has become increasingly vital as oil fields mature.

Exports are led by petroleum gas ($44.3B) and crude petroleum ($17.3B), with principal markets in Japan, South Korea and India. Imports are sourced mainly from China, France, the UK and the US.

Heavy industrial projects at Umm Said include a 50,000 b/d refinery, fertilizer production, steel manufacturing and petrochemical processing — most as joint ventures with European and Japanese firms alongside Qatar General Petroleum Corporation.
